Here I am, joining @agirlandherquill ‘s Writemas 21 days late, while posting it at 9pm because I cannot ever do anything on time

Anyway! Writemas day 21- the prompt I chose:

She watched the clouds swirl and dance high up in the sky, as free as the birds playing in their midst, as free as she would never be.

Slight backstory for my entry- this scene takes place between a time skip in book one of The Crimsons, I’ve had this scene in my mind for a while but I have never actually gotten it out on a page until I read this beautiful prompt. (Entry below the cut)

Everything on the island of The Crimsons was uncanny. Dianna wasn’t able to pinpoint what it was exactly, but something about the way the salt in the air smelled, how the sky was never dull, the way nothing was ever quiet- it simply felt wrong. Dianna had hated noise before it was a constant presence in her life. Now Dianna was reduced to nothing but a moth in the sunlight, believing she was receiving all she wanted before burning alive.

The island felt like it had once been beautiful, like the trees were once dark, like the moon had once truly shone on the blue lagoon hidden in the forest, like one could once sit and enjoy the almost-silence of an autumn breeze. Something had to have changed on the island, not something evil, but something good wrong.

The large gray rock she had found in the forest’s clearing a week ago was cold and rough; it felt like home. She looked up to the sky, staring at everything and nothing, breathing too hard and not at all, she had always been fueled by conflict, she only ever made good decisions under stress-she only made any decisions under stress. She watched the clouds swirl and dance high up in the sky, as free as the birds playing in their midst, as free as she would never be.

It was rare, Dianna had heard, that a Crimson was awarded a break; she had been given two days off in a row, perhaps it was because she was talented. Or maybe it was because she had been coddled her entire life and couldn’t handle real work. They couldn’t think that about her, could they? The thought of being seen as “the ex-princess wishing to be pampered” made Dianna sick, and then it made her angry. But her muscles did ache, and her lungs burned whenever Cordellia tried to give her endurance training. Maybe Dianna was a failure, maybe she was a spoiled princess who hadn’t dealt with anything real. But at that moment, she decided that none of it mattered.

Because Dianna Sullivan could be a spoiled princess, because Dianna Sullivan didn’t exist anymore. Adaeze Zanarhria could be as strong as her people, as strong as her father, as strong as the soldiers who had saved her when she was alone on Lystean soil.

Writemas days 22/23

Had to combine these two days because I’ve had Christmas parties with family but here’s some writing of my son!

Prompts I used-(day 22)- The feast was foul, the food as wrecked as the fractured plates it sat upon. And, "It's a time for celebration, wipe that frown from your face." (Day 23)- “One day, the purpose you serve shall be greater than this."

“Mother,” the Lystean queen’s voice faltered for a moment, “will you please refrain from smoking in front of my children?”

Elena Blitz exhaled a puff of smoke. “Calm down, dear, there’s really nothing wrong with Luminleaf, it just helps me relax.” She smiled.

Leo tried to cough up the smell of his grandmother’s arrogance as he sat down at the long table.

"It's a time for celebration, wipe that frown from your face." Elena blew embers of the green roll of herbs. Turning to the queen she sighed, “is the boy always like this?”

Queen Laura Blitz turned to her son with oceans of sorrow in her eyes. She knew how much Leo hated seeing his grandmother, she knew because she hated seeing Elena, too.

“And what exactly are we supposed to be celebrating, grandmother?” Leo asked, tilting his head.

Elena picked up a bell, swinging it by the handle. The castle maids flocked to her side with bottles of cherry-red wine like rabid dogs to a whistle. “We are celebrating a triumph over our enemies,” she cheered, her too loud, too high-pitched voice whistling through the gaps in her yellowing, wine-stained teeth.

“Let me guess,” the oldest child of the royal family of Lystearia pointed her fork at the apple in the mouth of the cooked pig at the head of the dinner table, blood dripping from the mouth onto the tablecloth. “You sent a group of soldiers to bomb a hospital.”

“Annalise Blitz!” Laura gasped, dropping her knife to the, practically reflective, polished stone floor.

“Thinking that way is what led little Lynn to run away.” Elena shook her head as she picked at the steaming greens on her plate. The feast was foul, the food as wrecked as the fractured plates it sat upon. Leo was glad his father was on a diplomatic trip across the sea, he couldn’t deal with two insufferable family members at this point.

“Then what are we celebrating?” Annalise asked, “if not the horrible ideals of our nation?”

“The Nyxerian princess has been banished. Dianna Sullivan will soon be gone, we will never worry about her again.”

“I believe you are the only one who worries of her,” Annalise mumbled, “I thought Adaeze was a lovely girl.”

“Her name is not Adaeze.” Elena slammed her hand to the table, flipping the smallest plate, which sat at the smallest princess’s seat.

“My apologies,” Annalise replied, “Dianna was a lovely girl.”

Elena, clearly dissatisfied with the apology, cleared her throat, turning to face Leo. She said, “Now, would you like to do the honors, young king?” She passed the bottle to Leo.

“Mother, he’s twelve,” Laura reached out to grab the bottle.

“He will be king.” Elena insisted, forcing the bottle into his hands. "One day, the purpose you serve shall be greater than this, but for now I need you to pour me a glass of wine.” She laughed. It was odd, the Lystean royals could laugh over a meal that cost them more than a middle class Umbrahnean family’s monthly meal cost while the child they celebrated watched warm blood drip down her forehead. How ironic the world could be.

If this were an elaborate scheme to get me to listen to a song at random this is how you’d do it, link it back to Ben 10 (or some other on of my fixations, thank you NSR fandom for TheFatRat’s Electrified), though it might be my headache or my dislike of songs that are glorified broken records but I… :P don’t like Ancient Aliens (fitting for my loathing of the conspiracy itself). Either way though I do see the vibes in the lyrics, probably my preferred Ben 10 x Ancient Aliens combo, at least it doesn’t try to claim the work of ancient Egyptians were the work of tetramands only call THAT fake by sourcing it to the bumbling of the galvan duo Blukic and Driba-

Your ask reminded me of a song that I’d often connect to Ben 10 - Alien Boy by Oliver Tree, if you’ll allow me to exchange songs with you - and the lyrics always made me think specifically about omnivoracious, but “I’m an alien among the human beings” stood out to me. I don’t know where that ranks on the take scale nor if it makes the song any good (roast me, it’s only fair for what I’ve said), but the power of ‘making everything about the character’ has lead me to wilder journeys that i can’t remember woops eto bleh
